At the end of June 2014, Trevor Smith – Business Development Manager at Pico Technology – will be travelling to Alaska and attempting to climb Mt Denali (aka Mt McKinley). Denali is the highest summit in North America: 20,337 ft / 6,168 m above sea level.
The climb will involve living in a tent on a glacier for most of July, hauling a 20kg backpack and 50kg of gear on a sledge up the mountain. Temperatures can drop as low as -40°C with 100 mph winds, and week-long snow storms are not uncommon. He told DesignSpark: “I'll probably spend most of the climb suffering, but once it's over I'm sure I'll enjoy it!”
For some fun, and to prove that PicoScope really is as lightweight and portable as Pico claim, Trevor will be carrying a PicoScope 2208A 200 MHz, 1 GS/s instrument with him in his backpack! He will be taking pictures of the instrument during the climb and, hopefully, on the summit. He won't be able to provide much detailed information during the climb; Denali is a rare Wi-Fi free area! He will send a trip report when he gets off the mountain at the end of July.
You can follow progress of Trevor’s expedition on this blog: http://alaskamountaineeringschool.blogspot.co.uk - look for reports starting 23rd June from his guide: Ryan Waters.
Trevor is also using the opportunity to raise funds for the RNIB. The RNIB help blind and partially sighted people and are the leading UK charity offering practical support and information to anyone with a sight problem. Furthermore, the RNIB are researching preventions and cures for age-related macular degeneration that affects over one in ten people over the age of 65.
